Interac Contract Renewal Timeline (2016-2017)

I know that I’ve already posted about my Interac timeline for 2015-2016, from getting hired to training… So you may be wondering what this post is about. Without getting into the details, I transferred branches at the end of my contract with Interac Kansai. There’s an entire story that goes along with this that I keep alluding to, and I swear that I will spill the beans in good time. (I’m […]

Why I’m Moving Schools

This post is probably going to be the most personal experience I’ve written about so far. I wanted to do it because it’s important to show you all that living in Japan isn’t great all the time… There are times when it can be hard and you’ll run into problems. Honestly, there are a few experiences like this that I’ve made a note of to write about eventually, so maybe […]

Elementary School Lunch (Kyuushoku) in January

It’s good to be back in the routine… Kind of. Being on vacation always makes me want to quit working. Anyway, here’s January’s school lunches. I also (finally) remembered to take a picture of the whole month’s menu, in case you were wondering what that looks like. If you can’t read Japanese, it may be a bit difficult for you at school… My main elementary school is a “self service” […]

Elementary School Lunch (Kyuushoku) in December

December is over! Well, I only worked half of December anyway and had (unpaid and paid) vacation the rest of the time… Let’s talk about the size of my school lunches. I worked in a Junior High under my last board of education, and let me tell you that there is a very big difference between the JHS meals and ES meals. Primarily, the difference was in the size. When […]

School Tour: The Teacher’s Room

Without a doubt, the teacher’s room is where you’re going to spend a majority of your time at school. If you thought you’d be in a classroom most of the time… Well, I hate to burst your bubble. In fact, for me specifically (remember, every situation is different), on my busiest days, I’ll still spend at least 4 hours in the teachers room. Yes, even when I teach 4-5 classes […]

Average Daily Elementary School Timetable Schedule

Coming from a Western country, your school day and the school day you’ll be working should be about the same. Though the specific hours may vary, you can expect to arrive in the morning and leave in the late afternoon. My current schedule is 8:15~4:25 but I’ve previously worked 8:00~4:00 and 8:10~4:15. (Are you seeing a general pattern?) Within those hours, I generally have between 2 to 4 classes a day. […]

Elementary School Lunch (Kyuushoku) in November

Here’s the monthly menu for my meals in November. If you haven’t noticed, I don’t eat lunch with my students. On occasion, I will eat with my students if invited to, but for the most part, I eat in the back of the teacher’s room with the other office staff. At my secondary school, I do eat with my students (which is why there are no pictures from my other […]

My Christmas English Board

I can’t believe the year has flown by so quickly already! I only have a few weeks left of teaching before I’m out of my current school for good. Time for me to get more active about posting and go through all of my drafts. You guys won’t believe how many pictures I take/half-written drafts I have sitting around. For Christmas, I decided that I wasn’t going to do an […]

School Tour: My English Room (Elementary School ALT)

One of the most disheartening things to me, when I first started teaching, was the fact that I didn’t have my own classroom. (Heck, I didn’t even have my own English board!) I knew an entire classroom dedicated to English was a lot to expect, especially because I’m not even technically a full time teacher! Though, I think it’s more common to have English rooms in elementary schools (where they […]

My Experiences With School Cleaning Time

The (dreaded?) cleaning closet If you’ve watched any school-life anime, you’ll know that an important part of the school day is cleaning the school. Students are allocated a set amount of time, either after lunch (elementary) or at the end of the day (junior high school) to clean. They’re responsible for cleaning both their classroom and the common areas of the school. Usually, a little jingle will play through the […]
